Comprehensive and invaluable, this practical reference expertly helps you develop an approach to facial reconstruction that is applicable to not only the cases presented in this book but also most defects that one might encounter in their surgical practice. The goal is to choose the best repair for a particular situation, dependent upon the patient, the location and the surgical defect. In addition to repair selection and design, the book teaches the practical technique of facial reconstruction, in particular helping to demystify some of the more complex or intimidating facial repair procedures. Key Features: Helps you accomplish both functional and aesthetic goals, guiding you through the thought process of how to determine the best repair for a specific surgical defect in a particular location and patient, and why it is preferred over other options. Uses a concise, step-by-step approach that leads you expertly through several techniques for each facial region. Bulleted key points highlight indispensable teaching details in each example. Features clinical images, artist illustrations, and the author's pearls for each repair. Includes examples of second intention healing, side-to-side repair, grafts, and various advancement, rotation, transposition and island flaps. For more complex repairs, such as bilobed transposition flaps, helical rim advancement flaps and paramedian forehead flaps, a step-by-step approach helps teach readers the intricasies of these more difficult repairs. Enhances your surgical flexibility, creativity, and expertise by providing a simplified, unique approach to facial reconstruction from a master surgeon in the field. Now with the print edition, enjoy the bundled interactive eBook edition, which can be downloaded to your tablet and smartphone or accessed online and includes features like: Complete content with enhanced navigation Powerful search tools and smart navigation cross-links that pull results from content in the book, your notes, and even the web Cross-linked pages, references, and more for easy navigation Highlighting tool for easier reference of key content throughout the text Ability to take and share notes with friends and colleagues Quick reference tabbing to save your favorite content for future use"-- "Facial reconstruction can be one of the most rewarding aspects of medicine"--

Abstract

This book analyzes unobvious relations between historical definitions of the face and its contemporary usage in popular culture and social media, like Facebook or Instagram. Bringing together a wide range of methodologies, it includes essays from manifold disciplines of the humanities such as philosophy, literary and art criticism, media and television studies, game studies, sociology and anthropology. The authors focus on both metaphorical and material meanings of the face. They grapple with crucial questions about modernity, modern and postmodern subjectivity, as well as with origins of certain linguistic terms and popular, colloquial phrases based on the concept of the face.

Abstract

Adam Wilkins draws on studies of nonhuman species, the fossil record, genetics, and molecular and developmental biology to reconstruct the evolution of the human face and its inextricable link to our species' evolving social complexity. The neural and muscular mechanisms that allowed facial expressions also led to speech, which is unique to humans.

Abstract

This book sets out to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the human face, in terms of both the fossil evidence and the recent findings of genetics, molecular biology, and developmental biology that have illuminated how the human face forms during embryonic and fetal development. In exploring this history, we will see how intimately the evolution of the face was connected to that of the brain and how mental and social processes have helped shape the human face; intriguingly, those processes have continued well into the recent history of our species. Along the way, we will take note of the remarkable diversity of human faces and examine the genetic foundations of that diversity, findings relevant to understanding the (probable) evolutionary future of the face. The final chapter sums up the key features of the history of the face, and explores how that history illuminates human evolution specifically and exemplifies the evolutionary process in general.--

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this Research Topic was to offer an interdisciplinary forum for researchers interested in the interplay of face, eye gaze, and body perception in the understanding of others, with an emphasis on behavioural and neural processing. The papers included in this topic come from cognitive, neuroscience and social psychology perspectives and shed new light on how facial and body cues interact with each other and with social, ecological and contextual factors (such as for example social identification and group membership) to form a unified representation that can guide our perceptions and responses to other people. Altogether, they provide an up-to-date picture of advances in this fascinating research field.
